Organized Session on Nondestructive Testing and Control of Residual Stress

Welcome to IEEE FENDT 2015

Organized Session on Nondestructive Testing and Control of

Residual Stress

Residual stress is a kind of inherent stress, which can keep the internal balance when the component has no external factors. In the producing process of mechanical component, residual stress will be inevitably produced by extruding, drawing, rolling, correction, cutting, grinding, surface rolling, shot peening or hammer, and the hot working of welding, cutting and so on. Usually, the influence of residual stress is harmful. For example, under combined effect of residual stress, working temperature and working medium, the fatigue strength, brittle fracture resistance, stress corrosion cracking resistance and size stability of the mechanical component will be greatly reduced. At the same time, the accumulation of residual stress in surface will lead to crack formed in surface or sub-surface of mechanical component. The near surface defects which hidden in the mechanical component seem to be more covert and dangerous, and tend to begin rupture. As a result, It is very important to improve the state of residual stress in mechanical component by exploring the effective method for testing and control of residual stress.

This organized session is intended to cover but may not be limited to the following subjects for nondestructive testing and control of residual stress:

Ÿ·Residual stress in the manufacturing of important equipment

·Service residual stress in the key component

·The residual stress problems in new structures, new materials and new techniques

·The relief and regulation of residual stress

·Residual stress and material performance

·Residual stress and component failure analysis

·Residual stress test and calculation

·Stress/Strain monitoring

·Other nondestructive testing and control technology of residual stress
